The Seven Habits - An Overview

In the beginning of this section Covey talks about habits and how they are they intersection of knowledge, skill, and desire. I agree with him when he says, "Habits can be learned and unlearned. But I also know it isn't a quick fix. It involves a process and a tremendous commitment." This might not be on the same level, but one of my habits is biting my nails, which is a bad habit. I have tried to quit, but there is no quick fix and it definitely takes commitment.

The last part of this chapter was a little more confusing I thought. I mean I have heard the story with the goose and the golden egg before, but the P/PC balance thing I didn't quite follow. Did you guys understand that??

  1. I wasn't clear on the P/PC balance either. Best I could tell, it means that you need to work towards things that will pay off in the long run (PC), which often means forgoing what pays off right now(P). Didn't understand the example with his daughter and Star Wars though.

  2. From what I gathered, the P was what you wanted and the PC was what you needed to do or have to obtain the P. If you neglect your PC or 'goose,' instead focussing only on the P 'egg,' eventually the goose's ability to produce eggs will decrease.
So basically, you have to balance results with methods. Don't drive your car into the ground to get somewhere faster. Take care of your PC, and you will have a steady, desirable P for the long term
